Absolutely. Scent classes are often particularly helpful for nervous or sensitive dogs.

When dogs are engaged in scent work, they’re using their nose and brain in a calm, purposeful way. This can help build confidence and focus without pressure or expectation. Dogs are given plenty of space, are not forced to interact with others, and are always supported at their own pace.

Many people are surprised by how much their dog relaxes once they realise there’s no pressure to perform.

It depends. Intact (entire / uncastrated) male dogs are welcome if they will cope with the supported class environment. Unspayed females are also accepted unless they are in-season; this will probably cause the other dogs too much distraction. Feel free to have a chat with me about your dog.

All dogs are on lead at all times, and classes are carefully managed to support everyone attending. Space, visual barriers and structured setups help ensure dogs can work comfortably without unnecessary interaction.

Yes – many reactive dogs do very well in scent classes.

We use space, visual barriers and careful class layouts to reduce triggers. Dogs are not required to work close to one another, and activities such as snuffle mats and quiet waiting setups are used to support dogs when it’s not their turn to work.

Scent work is often a safe and empowering activity for dogs who find the outside world challenging.

Each class lasts one hour.

During the session, your dog will take turns actively working and then resting. Some dogs benefit from short breaks in the car between turns, which helps keep the experience positive and prevents overload.

I limit classes to a maximum of five dogs.

This allows for plenty of space, individual support, and a calm learning environment – especially important for nervous, sensitive or reactive dogs.

There are six classes in total.

Depending on venue availability and other events, the classes don’t always run over six consecutive weeks. Sometimes the course may be spread over up to eight weeks, allowing for short gaps between sessions.

Any planned gaps will always be explained in advance.

Yes – you’ll need to purchase a red KONG.

The red KONG has a unique smell, so it cannot be black, pink or blue. You’ll need it at least one week before the classes start so we can do a little practice beforehand.

You’ll bring your red KONG to each class. Everything else you need will be provided.

Please bring:

• Your dog.
• Your red KONG.
• A mat or bed your dog can settle on.
• Plenty of treats.
• A positive, kind training attitude.

Dogs must be on a harness or flat collar with a lead. Slip leads are not permitted in classes.

Yes. Normally up to two people per dog can attend.

All children must be accompanied and supervised by an adult at all times. If you’d like more than two people to attend, just ask – we can sometimes accommodate observers and alternate who the handler is.

That’s not a problem.

The venue is close to Feltham train station, making it accessible by public transport.

If your dog needs a rest during class, you’ll be able to take them outside for a quiet sniff break instead of returning to a car.

For UK Sniffer Dogs Bronze Scent Detection classes, we use red KONG only.

Red KONG has a unique odour, and it doesn’t leave strong residual scent when moved between hides. This makes beginner scent work clearer and more enjoyable for dogs.

Red is also not within a dog’s colour spectrum, so as we reduce the size of the KONG piece, dogs must rely on their nose rather than their eyes.

Yes. Next door to the venue is Blenheim Park, part of Feltham Areas Parklands.

It’s ideal for a calm, sniffy walk before or after class. Try not to do too much, though – scent classes are mentally and physically tiring, and many dogs will need rest rather than extra activity.

No. Dogs do not need recall skills to take part.

Dogs remain on lead during classes, and all searching is carefully set up to be safe and manageable for every dog.

Scent classes are suitable for dogs from 6 months old. If your puppy is between 4 and 6 months of age, have a chat with me to decide if they are ready for the class.

Young dogs can benefit from confidence-building and problem-solving, while older dogs often enjoy the mental stimulation without physical strain.

Yes. Scent classes are an excellent option for older dogs.

Because scent work is low-impact and mentally engaging, it’s often ideal for dogs who still enjoy learning but may need gentler activities.

Your dog’s wellbeing always comes first.

If a dog needs a break, we can pause (snuffle mats are available for each dog), adapt the setup, or allow time to rest. Some dogs benefit from short breaks in the car or quiet sniffing outside. Nothing is forced, and progress is always led by the dog.

Yes. Many people choose to repeat the course.

Repeating scent classes can help build confidence, deepen understanding, and strengthen skills – especially for dogs who benefit from familiar routines.

The classes are in person.

You’ll also receive videos of the exercises, so you can practise at home and continue building your dog’s skills between sessions and after the course ends.

The 6-week course costs £200.

This includes all classes and the bonus video resources. Payment is required upfront to confirm your space. Places are non-transferable and non-refundable.
